Why I Fell in Love With Art

Updated: Jul 26, 2021

Hi guys, It is me, Gautham again … For today’s blog I will be writing about my life and my experiences with art since I was a small child. I started showing an early interest in art when I was around three to four years old. This is because I loved the fact that you can move your wrist on top of a paper and you can make something.

During my kindergarten days, I met this kid in my school who I became friends with. We would have a friendly drawing competition at recess times. I remember that I loved to do these competitions because back then I liked to see who was better. You know it was fun.

I used to be quite hyperactive, since I have ADHD. I am not like this anymore of course. But drawing helped me a lot to calm down and focus. Drawing is something where I could focus and forget myself for a long time. Sometimes I used to draw so much that I didn’t pay attention to what the teacher was teaching in the class. I used it as some kind of therapy. I enjoyed it so much that it helped me with my disorder. When I used my imagination to draw and sketch, I calmed down and focused. I didn’t always focus on the teacher of course, but more on the drawing. I think some of my teachers noticed how drawing help me focus so they used to let me draw in the class. This worked out well for me.

In those days, my school used to end at about 4pm, after which I used to be in the extended care after school, until my parents came and picked me up. We used to have an expert after school teacher, who really kicked off my interest for sketching. We used to call him Mr. Wood. He used to draw these amazing pictures or sketches for all the kids. He used to draw whatever they wanted. I remember waiting patiently every school day for classes to be done, then I rushed down to where he sat and asked him to usually draw me a superhero or a dragon sketch. He was one of the main reasons I took up art as a child, because then I wanted to be as good as he was. Now of course I do it because I enjoy it.

At around third or fourth grade, my artistic talent started to really show. I used to sketch all kinds of things like people, cars and superheroes at a more higher level for my age at the time. I started experimenting with shading and colors. I brought more life and depth to my sketches. I even sold a few and got pencils in return.

Now at this point I was at a level were I started to take my art more seriously than I ever did before. I took up a class for kids around the age of nine or ten. Ms. Palak, who was my art teacher then, introduced me to various mediums such as acrylic and water color and sketching techniques. My sketches started looking more life-like under my new teacher (www.facebook.com/palakverma06). At this moment in time I was feeling pretty good and happy about my artistic abilities, so I started doing water color. I found I was actually vey good at it. I could paint faces and animals almost perfectly for my age. I am giving below a couple of sketches I did during this time.

At around 6th grade when I was eleven or twelve, I decided to learn art at a more professional level at a class for people from ages 14 to adult. I started learning from an amazing teacher, Ms. Lana, that taught me how to do sketches and paintings perfectly. You can click here if you want to know more about my art school (www.veartstudio.com) and my art teacher. And this is the class in which I was introduced to oil painting. I painted a fair few paintings, including the Starry Night from the last post. And this is how far I have gotten so far. I am fourteen years old now. I have another oil painting coming for the next blog. So ya’ll stay tuned!
